Former US Congressman Jefferson faces 150 years in prison for bribery

On Wednesday ex- U.S. Congressman William Jefferson was convicted on 11 of 16 counts of bribery, racketeering and money laundering. The former Congress member from Louisiana was accused in 2007 of soliciting millions of dollars in bribes from companies while using his office to broker business deals in Africa. FBI agents found the $90,000 neatly wrapped in foil and stashed in his freezer during a search of his residence.

iPhone sales in China may be confronted by trademark issue

Apple need Hanwang Technology’s blessing to sell its similarly named iPhone in China. Hanwang Technology (also known as Hanvon) is a maker of devices and Chinese handwriting recognition systems, owner of the trademark "i-phone" for mobile phones in China. Their similar name “iPhone” would make it illegal to sell in China. So, Apple said that it is in talks with carrier China Unicom to offer the iPhone. Apple hopes to start sales in China in the next year.

Consumers should be financially protected, according to lawmakers

According to US lawmakers, there is a need to adopt a new financial product safety agency that would make sure consumer products such as mortgages and credit cards are safe and easy to understand. Travis Plunkett, legislative director of the Consumer Federation of America, said: "It has become clear that a major cause of the most calamitous worldwide recession since the Great Depression was the result of the simple failure of federal regulators to stop abusive lending, particularly unsustainable home mortgage lending."

Goldman Sachs pays US$60-million in order to settle investigation

The Goldman Sachs Group, Inc., a bank holding company that engages in investment banking, securities services and investment management, is agreed to pay US$60-million to settle a Massachusetts investigation into the mortgage securities packaging.As Mass. Attorney General Martha Coakley said at a news conference the bank should pay US$50-million as compensation to homeowners and the rest to the state.

A hearing over a conflict of interest in Madoff case postponed

A judge postponed a hearing that should be held on Wednesday over a potential conflict of interest involving Ira Sorkin, a lawyer of accused swindler Bernard Madoff, reports Reuters. No new date was set for the hearing and no reasons were given though both U.S. prosecutors and Sorkin consented to it. The hearing was called at the request of U.S. prosecutors over a potential conflict of interest for Sorkin in his representation of two accountants in a 1992 case brought by the U.S. Securities and Exchange Commission.

Yet, some states are already reaching out to these vendors as source of fiscal revenue.  The state of New York, one of the most important e-commerce players, recently modified its tax code and expanded the definition of the word "vendor;" this new definition seems to embrace those selling goods and services over the Internet.
