FTC claims the necessity of consumer data protection enhancement

Monday, the Federal Trade Commission held a conference to discuss guidelines on how companies collect and store vast amounts of data about consumers for very little money to use it for advertising.

Fed is going to Big Screen with credit card rational usage advert

Fed announced Wednesday, it intends to sponsor 45-second ads before movie previews targeted counsel consumers about how to use their credit cards wisely during the holiday shopping season.

The Fed decided to launch the campaign when it faces criticism for doing too little to protect its consumers from risky lending practices that helped spark the financial crisis and U.S. economic recession.

The advert will be presented at 12 theaters in major metropolitan areas from November 27 through December 3.

Lehman Brothers Holdings Inc is suing American International Group for $9 million in payments the bank says it is owed from credit default swap protection it bought from the insurer on companies including General Motors and Washington Mutual. Lehman alleges in a suit filed with a New York bankruptcy court last week that AIG is using the bank's failure as an excuse not to make payments, and that this violates U.S.

Thinking Money, a free financial advice and news site, counted up that credit card fraud losses total GBP609.9m, online banking fraud losses total GBP52.5m and cheque fraud total GBP41.9m. Credit card fraud is rising and, as the Association for Payment Clearing Services – APACS states, around 50% of this is now coming from card-not-present (CNP) fraud.

Heartland builds end-to-end encryption system

Heartland Payment Systems plans to protect its credit- and debit-card processing network with an end-to-end encryption system that it will begin rolling out with its merchants in the third quarter. This will be the first effort of its kind in the United States. Heartland has not yet publicly released the technical specifications of the hardware and software it is spending millions of dollars to develop.

eBillme and First Data conducted the survey where they tried to reveal some important perceptions of the consumers. Answering the question about whom they would consider at fault if they were to experience identity theft as a result of online shopping, the majority of the respondents (60%) said that it would be the merchants. But on the other part the majority of those surveyed (42%) said that they would ask the payment provider for assistance upon experiencing identity theft.

Firstly, it is recommended to create metrics for the business and observe online fraud rates.
