Facebook under pressure to adopt “panic button” to call the police

Facebook is being pressed by the UK officials to adopt a “panic button” after a teenager was killed by a man she was communicating with on the social networking website.

Along with other social networks Facebook is being lobbied by the British child protection agencies so that they adopt a one-click button which can allow children to get immediate police help if they suspect they're at risk.

Following the kidnap, rape and murder of 17-year-old Ashleigh Hall, the pressure on Facebook intensified. The killer known as Peter Chapman was using a fake Facebook profile and made friends with the victim on the Internet.

Panic?
We need to take a big deep breath over these issues. This most recent wave of media 'panic' needs some level a measured check put into place. Even when it comes down to the lauguage being used to fire a sense of 'panic' in the public conciousness! There is in reality no 'panic' button on social networking sites, it is a 'report' button. The 'reality' is that policy makers and politcians making decisions and fuelling 'debate' ,(and I'm not sure it is 'debate' as it all seems very skewed to me!),do infact ,no very little about the issues they wish to address. The research points to the fact that young people are at far more risk from each other than the 'boogie man' paedophile. This most recent case is without doubt a great tragedy and will have touched the hearts of all parents. However, there needs to be more done in terms of educating parents and young people to the real facts and education means just that! Use evidence based research to develop your programmes not media exploded headlines.
