Schmidt and Zuckerberg to talk to G8 leaders on Internet control

The meeting of tech industry players ended up in selecting Eric Schmidt of Google Inc and Mark Zuckerberg of Facebook and others as delegates to talk at the Group of Eight meeting Thursday in Deauville, France. Schmidt and Zuckerberg uttered their warning to governments to tread lightly on Internet regulation because moves to tame its rough edges risked hurting its virtues.

The tech forum lasted for two days in Paris where tech titans, academics and policy makers showed their discordance on critical issues though they tried to agree on a message to take to world leaders at the Group of Eight industrialized nations meeting.

The forum was aimed by French President Nicolas Sarkozy to put an end to the arguments over regulating the Internet and encouraging the digital economy.

The tech forum dubbed as the eG8 brought no constructive proposal and resulted with just few concrete policy recommendations and mostly vague conclusions that the delegation of six technology chief executives, including Schmidt and Zuckerberg, will present to leaders in Deauville on Thursday.

The outcome highlights the difficulty of finding a way to regulate the Internet that is acceptable to both governments and industry.
