70 eBay ‘sellers’ were arrested in Romania for scam

70 cybercrooks were arrested by Romanian police this week on the allegations they used compromised eBay profiles to defraud buyers on the online auction.

After the cyber crooks obtained the login credentials of the legitimate users via phishing scam they used these trusted accounts to offer non-existent luxury goods. Buyers paid for the lots but never received these items.

The filings say that the 800 victims of the fraudulent scheme have lost €800,000 in total since 2006. Fraudsters scammed people in Western Europe, Scandinavia, the US, Canada and New Zealand.

In the course of joint investigation by FBI and Romanian Directorate for Investigating Organised Crime and Terrorism (DIICOT) 101 search warrants were executed with a number of arrests performed across Romania on Tuesday.
