Facebook goes to India

Facebook plans to set its office in India in a move to join a long list of international firms that have looked to employ a skilled workforce that can deliver support services at relatively cheap wages.

As company’s representatives stated on Monday, Facebook's office in the southern Indian city of Hyderabad will support users, advertisers and developers in India and around the world.

Hyderabad also hosts other foreign companied like Google and Microsoft, whose Indian employees work on everything from writing software codes to providing customer services at cheaper wages than in developed countries, such as the United States.

Facebook, which enables users to connect and share information with friends online, has emerged as one of the Internet's most popular destinations, challenging established players like Yahoo and Google.

More than 8 million of current Facebook's total users live in India. 70% of the people using Facebook are outside the US and are accessing the service from over 70 languages.

Facebook's office in Hyderabad is supposed to supplement operations supported out of Palo Alto, California, Dublin, Ireland and a recently announced location in Austin, Texas.

At the first stage Facebook plans to recruit a small team in India, and expects further growth as the office expands. The company is hiring people to join the online sales and operations teams that it is forming in the Hyderabad and Austin offices.
