According to researchers it is a good point if doctors write and edit a Wikipedia encyclopedia. As in Journal of the American Medical Informatics Association written Wikipedia becomes a major online source of information for people, and doctors should recognize that fact.
The research was conducted by contributors of Wikipedia Michael R. Laurent, a medical student at Catholic University of Leuven, Belgium, and Tim J. Vickers, a post-doctoral researcher at Washington University in St. Louis.
As it was found up to 85% of search words tested at different search engines, Wikipedia appeared to be almost the first result from 10.
One of the reasons why doctors stick to online outlets to which only they can contribute and pass by Wikipedia may be Wikipedia’s editing policy, which allows anyone to change or add something to its articles, as authors of the research think. But as they believe doctors can improve quality of the online library.
Jonathan Streeter, a San Antonio, Texas-based radiologist who runs RadiologyWiki believes that Wikipedia would benefit if physicians contribute articles for the general public’s purposes, but he is not sure about whether “this excludes them from contributing to references that have a target audience of their own practice or specialty”.
