Significant changes of Second Life content are planned this summer

Linden Lab announced today that its plans for separating out adult content from the rest of Second Life became more determined. The initial idea was to solicit community feedback for definitions of adult content, filter that out of search results and locate it on a separate virtual continent. More concrete plan includes now definitions of PG, Mature, and Adult content for ratings and preferences, a more austere age verification system, and the launch of a new viewer with more controls. The default for all users will be Mature, the definition of which is still under debate. Preliminary but still very hazy definitions are already known. But Linden lawyers discuss the challenge of not automatically ruling out any content while also not making their definitions too broad. Some flexibility in the level of sexuality or violence sounds built in to each definition. The major results are slated to be appreciable this summer. The new viewer will be available next week, but go live in June. Shifting content and labeling it is expected to take through August. Mark Kingdon, CEO of Linden Lab, noted: “Preferences and community standards vary tremendously across industries, countries and cultures; our goal is to retain as much of the freedom as possible while continuing to push the medium and our platform forward. As we continue to grow, it is crucial that we maintain the diversity of user-generated content while providing enhanced controls to support a wider range of uses.”
