MasterCard Incorporated disclosed its full-year and fourth-quarter 2008 operating results for Europe. According to the results the company has shown a double-digit growth in spite of hard economic situation throughout the world.

For the full-year 2008, the European region reported double-digit growth in company gross euro volume with 15.5 %, purchase volume with 15.7 %, purchase transactions with 13.2 % and cash transactions with 10.5 %, against 2007. European customers made 6.4 billion purchase transactions using MasterCard cards in 2008.

For the fourth quarter, the region reported following growth: in MasterCard gross euro volume- 8.3 %, purchase volume - 7.6 %, purchase transactions - 8.0 %, cash transactions - 7.4 % and cards issued - 10.4 %, compared to the corresponding period of 2007. 1.6 billion purchase transactions have been made by European cardholders in the fourth quarter of 2008.

It has been revealed that 195 million MasterCard® cards (excluding Maestro® and Cirrus®) had been issued by the company across Europe as of 31 December 2008. 

MasterCard has started offering following new services in 2008: Cartaimpronta World MasterCard through Banca Popolare di Milano in Italy; BRD by Groupe Société Générale in Romania; first MasterCard card specifically targeted at female consumers by BW Bank in Germany; etc. Moreover, the Italian Ministers of Economy and Welfare launched a new social card project jointly with MasterCard prepaid cards issued by Poste Italiane aimed at distribution in 14,000 post offices in Italy to about 1.3 million citizens.
