[img_assist|nid=11029|title=|desc=|link=none|align=left|width=100|height=90]As per recent reports the US Justice Department released an approval to Verizon's acquisition of Alltel which is selling off its assets in 22 states. This will allow Verizon to establish the largest mobile operator in the USA. Verizon has been working with the Justice Department to identify areas where the combined company might be at risk of holding a monopoly and the total number of such areas amounted 100.
The two companies reportedly identified 85 areas where they thought combined ownership might be a problem while the rest 15 were identified by the Justice Department. At present time Verizon has 70.8 million and Alltel 13 million subscribers while the combination plans to cover only about 78 million. Thus the remnant 5.5 million will likely be searching for another provider.
One more approval to the amalgamation along with the white space usage should be given by the FCC yet. The communication commission will be voting on the issue on Tuesday.
