Certainly pinnacle security and smoke detectors are an option that should be considered. I know every home in America is required to have smoke detectors, and but most don't do anything but make noise when they go off. No one else knows there is a fire. If you are not in your home, an unmonitored smoke alarm would give your house no protection.

Sirens are another nice add-on. They are generally not included in most do-it-yourself systems.

And in my opinion, one of the critical items needed is a backup battery. If you have a power failure, your security system still needs to work.

There are also devices with transmitters to arm and disarm the system. For example, when you open your garage door with a transmitter, you could disarm the security system with the same transmitter.
