1. "It’s not my job."

When your boss asks you to do something that it is not in your direct area, chances are it's not really an option. Take it as a compliment. He probably thinks that your skills and ideas would be good fit for the task. Use this situation to prove that you are a team player and a problem solver. By the way, e-mailing your friends or posting on Internet forums from work is also not your responsibility, yep?

2. "Sure, no problem." (When you are not going to complete the task)

If you want to get a promotion, you need to become the most reliable subordinate for your boss. So it is not good to take on a task that you are not going to complete. In this case you will be labeled as an unreliable employee. 

3. “Mission impossible: it can't be done.”  

4. “Sorry, I forgot.”

It sometimes happens that we have so many various tasks that we can’t keep them all in mind. However, it’s not in your best interest to admit that you have forgotten about something. It will show that you are an absent-minded and careless employee. Buy an organizer to schedule and track all your tasks. 

5. “You don't know that?”

Most bosses believe that they know everything, even though you and your coworkers may have another point of view. Don’t try to show your boss that you know more than he does. Otherwise, you will become a serious contender in his eyes. Use innocent phrases like "You probably know this but…" It will show that you respect his intelligence and credibility. 

6. “Wait a minute!”

When you are called into your boss' office, it’s better to go immediately. Who is the boss to decide? All other things like urgent phone calls can wait because bosses rarely view our personal wants as an important reason for delay.  

7. “Did you get dressed in the dark?”

You boss may wear the ugliest shirt or sweater on earth, but you should better keep your opinion to yourself. Nobody likes to hear that they are looking awful. Even if your boss has bad taste, it is not your job to tell how he should dress (unless you are his personal stylist, of course). 

8. “You are late.”

Being late is one of the privileges to be a boss. You have to admit it, even if it’s not convenient for you. Telling your boss that he is late means that you doubt his leadership. 

9. “He stopped working first!”

You are not in the kindergarten, so don’t deflect blame to someone else. Make sure that you understand the problem and promise your boss that it won’t happen again. You will not look as a responsible employee if you spend more time finger-pointing than working.

Saying nothing to your boss is also no good. They appreciate input, ideas and information. If you are too quiet about what you are working on, it can be a sign that you do nothing.
